CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS

The upcoming book, Natural Products in Drug Discovery: Benefits, Challenges, and Opportunities, will combine the potential of traditional medicine with the modern techniques for the use of natural products derived from plants, microbes, and marine sources as the basis for drug development. Natural products have been the source of most of the active ingredients of medicines with potential bioactivities which can be explored for drug development. They include compounds from plants (including elliptinium, galantamine, and huperzine), microbes (daptomycin) and marine organisms (cryptophycins, citarabine, bryostatin-1). They cover a range of therapeutic indications: antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antidiabetic, hepatoprotection, immunomodulatory etc. and show a great diversity of chemical structures. Natural products, their semi?synthetic derivatives, and synthetic compounds inspired by natural products now form the majority of drugs in use for humans and animals.

This book will cover the natural products derived from plants, microbes, and marine organisms to be used as potential drug candidates. The main attraction of the book will be the information on bioactive potential of these natural products such as antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, anticancerous, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antiviral etc. and their usage in drug development. Recent techniques used for the isolation and identification of bioactive compounds from natural products will be covered. Challenges and opportunities in natural products based drug discovery will be reviewed. It will review the latest developments in the field of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics for harnessing these natural products for commercial applications. Current status of bioprospection and commercialization of natural products based drugs will also be reviewed.

We welcome high-quality book chapter contributions centered (but not limited to) on the following themes:

  1. Natural products as drug candidates
  2. Traditional knowledge for drug discovery
  3. Plant derived natural products
  4. Bioactive molecules from marine sources and their potential use in drug discovery
  5. Natural products from microbes
