Like other crops, the intensive cultivation of commercial flowers has accentuated pest problems, as farmers tend to use more agricultural chemicals, which, in turn, increase the problems of pesticide resistance, pest resurgence, and residues leading to health hazards. This volume, Advances in Pest Management in Commercial Flowers, looks at the major challenges and improvements in this growing area today. It first provides an informative overview of worldwide pests of important commercial flowers. It explores a number of important issues in this area, such as the role of climate change on insect pests of commercial flowers and the synthetic chemicals and their possible harmful effects on the environment. It goes on to offer novel research on management of pest problems in commercial flower production, discussing eco-friendly techniques, the use of new and promising chemicals, the employment of indigenous technical knowledge, and more. This volume will be of immense value and use to floriculturists, entomologists, plant protection specialists, students, policymakers, and growers worldwide, encouraging them to adopt alternative pest suppression methods that are effective and eco-friendly. CONTENTS: About the Authors / Editors: Editors: Suprakash Pal, PhD Associate Professor of Agricultural Entomology, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) (North Bengal Agriculture University), Pundibari, Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India Suprakash Pal, PhD, is currently Associate Professor in Agricultural Entomology at Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) (North Bengal Agriculture University), Pundibari, Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India. He has been carrying out teaching, research, and extension activities for more than 16 years. His areas of interest include studying arthropod diversity in agroecosystems with special reference to floricultural and medicinal plants as well as conservation biological control. He teaches undergraduate as well as postgraduate students and has guided five MSc students and is currently supervising one PhD student in his role as chairman of the advisory committee. He has published 38 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and three book chapters for reputed publication houses. He has been associated with several externally funded research projects and is presently pursuing a major project as Principal Investigator, funded by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), Government of India, on a survey of pests and diseases of medicinal plants in West Bengal. He has performed the administrative responsibility of In-Charge on the All India Network Project on Jute and Allied Fibres, Indian Council of Agricultural Research at UBKV, and has presented research papers at 12 seminars and symposia, including two international events. He has served as a reviewer for several reputed national and international journals and has acted as an external examiner for several universities, such as Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India; Bidhan Chandra Agricultural University, Kalyani, India; Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar, India, etc. He is a life member of five national and international professional societies, including the Entomological Society of India (ESI), New Delhi, India. Akshay Kumar Chakravarthy, PhD Head and Principal Scientist, Division of Entomology and Nematology, Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, India Akshay Kumar Chakravarthy, PhD, is Head and Principal Scientist at the Division of Entomology and Nematology at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, India. With over three decades of experience of teaching, research, and extension, Dr. Chakravarthy has been an investigator for over 35 research projects and has guided more than 25 students for postgraduation. With a PhD from Punjab Agricultural University and a postdoc from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, he is a member of several national and international scientific organizations. He is also an advisor, panelist, referee, reviewer, and editor, and he is associated with several national and international journals worldwide. He is the author of many books and over 300 scientific papers and 30 chapters on entomology and natural history. Recently he has published books titled New Horizons in Insect Science: Towards Sustainable Pest Management; Economic and Ecological Significance of Arthropods in Diversified Ecosystems: Sustaining Regulatory Mechanisms; and Arthropod Diversity and Conservation in the Tropics and Sub-Tropics. A field-oriented and widely traveled biologist, he is actively working on novel approaches in integrated pest management, host plant interaction, vertebrate pest management, biodiversity, and environmental conservation issues. His interests also include insects, birds, bats, rodents, and mammals. |
