This new book volume, Plant Secondary Metabolites for Human Health: Extraction of Bioactive Compounds, deals with recent advanced research in the medical and nutrition sciences, natural products, and health-promoting foods that work to reduce the risk of diseases while enhancing overall well-being. Plant-based functional foods are known to contain compounds (also referred to as phytochemicals) in the leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits that help to promote human health. These plant products are drawing attention of researchers because of their demonstrated beneficial effects against disease, particularly diabetes, hypertension, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, among others. The medicinal and nutritional use of plant secondary metabolites is a hot topic and has been receiving extensive attention from both health professionals and the public.

The book covers these main areas:
Part 1: Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Plants discusses the concept of functional foods, available sources, biochemistry, structural composition, different biological activities for better health, and vitality of bioactive compounds in cell signaling and biological assays.

Part 2: Plant-Based Drugs looks at plant products, their health-promoting potential, and natural remedies for lifestyle diseases. It also examines the special properties of Eugenia uniflora: its physical characteristics, traditional and nutritional uses and importance, distribution, and more. This section also discusses plant biotechnological interventions for bioacitve secondary metabolites, epigenetics, and functional foods. Functional foods, beyond providing the basic nutrition, may offer a potentially positive effect on health by acting as epigenetic modulators that cure various disease conditions.

Megh R. Goyal, PhD, PE, is a Retired Professor in Agricultural and Biomedical Engineering from the General Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at University of Puerto Rico–Mayaguez Campus; and Senior Acquisitions Editor and Senior Technical Editor-in-Chief in Agriculture and Biomedical Engineering for Apple Academic Press Inc. He has worked as a Soil Conservation Inspector and as a Research Assistant at Haryana Agricultural University and Ohio State University. He was the first agricultural engineer to receive the professional license in Agricultural Engineering in 1986 from the College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico. On September 16, 2005, he was proclaimed as “Father of Irrigation Engineering in Puerto Rico for the twentieth century” by the ASABE, Puerto Rico Section, for his pioneering work on micro irrigation, evapotranspiration, agroclimatology, and soil and water engineering. During his professional career of 45 years, he has received many prestigious awards. A prolific author and editor, he has written more than 200 journal articles and textbooks and has edited over 25 books. He received his BSc degree in engineering from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India; his MSc and PhD degrees from Ohio State University, Columbus; and his Master of Divinity degree from Puerto Rico Evangelical Seminary, Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, USA.

P. P. Joy, PhD, is an eminent researcher and Professor of Agronomy and Head of the Pineapple Research Station, Kerala Agricultural University, Vazhakulam, Kerala, India. He joined the university in 1984 as an Assistant Professor (Agronomy) and undertook research and development of pulses initially, followed by rice, medicinal and aromatic plants, and subsequently fruit crops. Presently, he is involved in developing agro-technologies, processing technologies, and IT-enabled services for pineapple, passion fruit, and other economically important fruit crops of Kerala, India. With 32 years of service in agricultural research and development, teaching, and extension work, Dr. Joy has expertise in agronomy, soil, and water conservation; water, nutrient, weed, and cropping system management; and research projects, database, web, and ICT management. He was instrumental in developing websites for the research centers where he worked. He has received many awards and honors. He is a member of several national societies. He has authored over 200 publications, including 25 books/chapters, 70 research papers, 25 bulletins, 35 seminars/symposia/conference papers, and 40 popular articles. The team lead by him developed a variety “Sugandhini” (ODC-130) in cinnamon, 134P in passion fruit, and agrotechnologies for rice, pulses, medicinal and aromatic plants, and fruit crops. He was the Principal Investigator of 25 university research projects, and he has associated with another 32 projects of AICRP (All India Coordinated Research Projects) and Kerala Agricultural University. He was the Principal Investigator of the ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) ad-hoc research projects, including “Standardization of agro-techniques for lesser-known medicinal and aromatic plants of Zingiberaceae,” “Development of lemongrass oleoresin for flavoring,” the KSCSTE (Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment) project “Evaluation of passion fruit types for commercial cultivation in Kerala,” and the Kerala Pineapple Mission (KPM) project “Organic versus inorganic nutrient management of pineapple varieties.” He was further associated with twelve projects funded by ICAR, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, National Watershed Development Project for Rainfed Areas (NWDPRA), Kerala Horticulture Development Programme (KHDP), among others.

Hafiz Suleria, PhD, is currently working as the Alfred Deakin Research Fellow at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. He is also an Honorary Fellow in the Diamantina Institute Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland, Australia. Previously, he has worked as postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetic and Health at Kansas State University, USA. He was awarded an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) for his PhD research at the University of Queensland School of Medicine, the Translational Research Institute (TRI), in collaboration with the Commonwealth and Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO, Australia). Before joining the UQ, he worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Food Sciences, Government College University Faisalabad, Pakistan. He also worked as a Research Associate in the PAK-US Joint Project funded by the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan, and the Department of State, USA, with collaboration of the University of Massachusetts, USA, and the National Institute of Food Science and Technology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan. His major research focus is on food nutrition, particularly in screening of bioactive molecules—isolation, purification, and characterization using various cutting-edge techniques from different plants, marine and animal sources; in vitro, in vivo bioactivities; and cell culture and animal modeling. Dr. Suleria has published more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers in journals. He is also in collaboration with more than ten universities where he is working as a co-supervisor/special member for PhD and postgraduate students and where he is also involved in joint publications, projects, and grants.
