Reviews
“Important and timely . . . The insights and narratives shared in this volume make a significant contribution to rethinking empowerment through a postcolonial lens. They invite readers to recognize the layered, contested nature of women’s identities and labor beyond prevailing orthodoxies. By situating empowerment within local histories and intersectional realities, this book opens new spaces for imagining justice, dignity, and agency in societies still negotiating the legacies of colonialism. It challenges us all to listen deeply to these diverse voices and learn from the ways women continue to redefine power and possibility.”
—From the Foreword by Prof. Ülkü Eriþoðlu, Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya, Türkiye

This new book, Narratives of Economic Empowerment: Women’s Identity Reconstruction in Colonial and Post-Colonial Societies, sheds light on how contemporary frameworks used to define and measure women’s empowerment are deeply embedded in colonial histories, with many of these inherited notions continuing to influence post-colonial societies. Rather than viewing women’s identities through colonial or paternalistic lenses, the volume argues for the construction of a new epistemology that is grounded in local contexts, indigenous knowledge systems, and women’s lived experiences.

Through a rich collection of chapters authored by scholars and practitioners from diverse regions, the book brings forward rooted and often overlooked narratives that reveal how women navigated, resisted, and redefined economic roles within shifting colonial and post-colonial landscapes. It offers a timely intervention into debates on gender, development, and decolonization, making space for stories that reflect the complexity and resilience of women’s economic identities across time and place.

This book is an essential resource for scholars, policymakers, and activists interested in understanding the historical and contemporary dynamics of women’s economic empowerment and identity reconstruction. Through its comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach, the book sheds light on the enduring quest for gender equality and economic justice in a rapidly changing world.
