The Chilean Winter Rainfall–Valdivian Forest Hotspot extends across a remarkable latitudinal gradient encompassing Mediterranean-type ecosystems, temperate rainforests, Andean environments, and insular systems.

Drawing on the expertise of contributing scholars, the chapters explore the region’s geography, geology, soils, and climate and examine its rich diversity of lycophytes and ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms, freshwater fishes, birds, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. The volume also considers the forces shaping the hotspot’s future, including land-use and landscape-pattern change, wildfire, and habitat degradation, with a focused examination of habitat quality in the Constitución area.

Although no single volume can fully capture the complexity of this diverse region, this book offers a valuable synthesis of current knowledge. T. Pullaiah, PhD, is former Professor in the Department of Botany at Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Andhra Pradesh, India, where he taught for more than 35 years. He held several leadership positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Biosciences and Head of the Departments of Botany and Biotechnology. He also served as President of the Indian Botanical Society and the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy and was a fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences. His honors include the Panchanan Maheshwari Gold Medal, Prof. P. C. Trivedi Medal, Dr. G. Panigrahi Memorial Lecture Award, Prof. Y. D. Tyagi Gold Medal, and Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Under his guidance, 54 students earned doctoral degrees. He has authored 75 books, edited 55 volumes, and published more than 340 research papers. His books include Mangroves: Biodiversity, Livelihoods and Conservation, Ethnobotany of India, Global Biodiversity, Apomixis in Angiosperms, Red Sanders: Silviculture and Conservation, Flora of Andhra Pradesh, and Encyclopaedia of World Medicinal Plants. He was also a member of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Professor Pullaiah received his PhD from Andhra University, India, attended Moscow State University, Russia, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow from 1976 to 1978.

Cristian Echeverría, PhD, is Full Professor in the Faculty of Forest Sciences at the University of Concepción, Chile, and a researcher at Natura Invest Centre, where he contributes to nature-based investment strategies by integrating biodiversity metrics and ecosystem services assessments into restoration and conservation finance frameworks. His research focuses on landscape ecology, forest ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and landscape sustainability, particularly in the temperate forest ecosystems of southern South America. Dr. Echeverría is a member of the Tree Specialist Group of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN SSC) and a co-author of the International Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration, developed by the Society for Ecological Restoration. He co-founded and formerly served as President of the Chilean Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology and has served as Vice President of the association at the global level since 2019. In 2007, he established the Landscape Ecology Laboratory at the University of Concepción and currently directs Campus Naturaleza, the university’s fifth campus and a large-scale conservation and ecological restoration initiative. He previously served as Director of the Department of Forest Management and Environment and has led or participated in numerous nationally and internationally funded research projects. He holds a Forestry Engineering degree and MSc from Universidad Austral de Chile and graduate degrees from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
