In recent years, the exploration of marine environments has unveiled a treasure trove of bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals, and functional foods—each with profound implications for human health and well-being. Marine organisms, from microalgae and seaweeds to deep-sea fish and invertebrates, are rich in compounds with promise in addressing some of the most pressing health challenges of our time, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and metabolic disorders. This new book, Bioactive Compounds, Nutraceuticals, and Functional Foods of Marine Origin: Sources, Clinical Perspectives, and Applications, helps to bridge the gap between marine science and clinical research, providing a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge in this rapidly evolving field.

This comprehensive volume discusses the identification and extraction of bioactive compounds from marine sources along with their potential applications in promoting human health. The volume discusses the diverse marine organisms that are the source of these bioactive compounds, exploring their chemical composition, mechanisms of action, and ecological roles in their natural habitats, providing an understanding of the unique properties of these compounds, leading to potential applications in medicine, nutrition, and functional food development. It covers bioactive compounds from marine algae, marine invertebrates, marine fishes, mollusks, echinoderms, and crustaceans.

Chapters focus on the clinical perspectives of marine-derived nutraceuticals and functional foods. The book highlights the growing body of evidence on marine-derived bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals, and functional foods in the prevention and management of health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, neuro-endocrine disorders, infectious diseases, and gastrointestinal diseases.

It looks at functional aspects of marine bioactive peptides and proteins, marine fish-derived functional lipids, diacylglycerol rich oil of marine origin, and more. Special attention is given to the safety of marine-derived products, efficacy, and regulatory aspects.

The practical applications of marine bioactive compounds in the food and pharmaceutical industries are explored as well as the future trends and the ongoing quest for new marine sources that could revolutionize the fields of nutraceuticals and functional foods. This book is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians, and students, as well as anyone interested in the field of marine science and human health. By bringing together expertise from multiple disciplines, the volume aims to inspire further research and innovation in harnessing the full potential of marine-derived bioactive compounds.
