This comprehensive new book explores the intersection of biotechnology and plant pathology, presenting biotechnology tools and techniques that can be employed to understand, manage, and combat plant diseases.

This new volume presents up-to-date information on the basics of detection and diagnosis of plant pathogenic microbes; explains the beneficial soil microorganisms and their role in phytopathological biotechnology; and covers the applications of plant tissue culture techniques for micropropagation and/or genetic engineering of various crop plants in the light of plant disease management.

The chapters cover the use of tissue-culture techniques in plant pathology, screening for disease resistance through in-vitro selection, recombinant DNA technology for pest and disease control, monoclonal antibodies and their use in plant pathology, somaclonal variation as a source of disease and pest resistance, new tools for detection and diagnosis of plant pathogenic microbes, and more. The volume discusses cutting-edge advancements in the field, presenting case studies and real-world examples to illustrate the practical applications of biotechnology in plant pathology.

Key features:

  • Explains the role of plant tissue-culture techniques in plant pathology
  • Provides explicit information on transgenic technology as an indispensable tool for biotechnologists
  • Informs on the new generation tools and techniques for detection of beneficial or plant pathogenic microbes.
  • Discusses the current scenario and future prospects of biotechnology in plant disease management
Summarizing the current scenario, major challenges, and future prospects of crop improvement strategies for combating biotic stresses, this volume will be essential for scientists, researchers, and students and faculty in plant pathology and related areas.
