Reviews
“In this very interesting book, Prof. Singh has brought together authorities from several different countries, and together they have produced a detailed account of the regional differences in allergenic pollen, providing a wealth of information for allergists, aerobiologists, botanists, and others interested in this fascinating branch of medical science.”
—From the Foreword by Prof. Gennaro D'Amato, MD, FAAAAI.
University Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Naples, Italy; Chairman Committee World Allergy Organization on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Allergy; Director, Division of Respiratory and Allergic Diseases Department of Chest Diseases High Speciality, A. Cardarelli Hospital, Napoli Italy

“A fascinating book on a fascinating subject. Books published on allergies from India are rare. Dr. Singh has brought together a collection of well-known authors from India and other countries. The chapters are superbly divided and the book will be a treasure trove of allergy information from the Indian subcontinent. Doctors (particularly those who work in the field of allergy), scientists, and researchers will refer to this book for reliable and important information on allergy for several years.”

—Dr. Wiqar Shaikh, Professor of Medicine, Grant Medical College and Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, Bombay, India

Allergy and Allergen Immunotherapy: New Mechanisms and Strategies is a valuable and comprehensive book that covers allergy and causative allergens and provides diagnostic and therapeutic aspects as well. With chapters from internationally recognized experts in the field, the book provides a balanced approach to enumerating pollen allergens as well as allergy diagnosis and therapeutic management and safety assessment of genetically engineered food allergens.

The book features a special section on allergic diseases and allergens from tropical countries, including such countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Iran, and South Korea, giving the book a global appeal.

The book is broken in the following sections:

  • Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, and Diagnosis of Allergy
  • Aerobiology and Allergic Diseases
  • Pollen Allergy in the Tropics and Temperate Regions
  • Allergy in Children
  • Food Allergy Evaluation
  • Allergen Immunotherapy and Anti IgE
The book deals not only on basics of allergy and allergen immunotherapy but also discusses indoor environments and safety considerations of genetically modified food allergens. The first of its kind volume from the Indian subcontinent that caters to the needs of clinicians, aerobiologists, environmentalists, and regulatory agencies as well, the volume will be of immense interest for clinicians and patients of allergy as well as diagnostic and therapeutic management of allergy in tropics.

Key features:
  • illustrates the basic mechanisms of allergy
  • presents the in vivo and in vitro methods of allergy diagnosis
  • provides in-depth information on monitoring, distribution, and application of aerobiology in allergy practices
  • provides knowledge on airborne pollen and fungi in indoor and outdoor air of Europe, USA, India, and Iran
  • explores the impact of meteorological factors on pollen allergens
  • presents a detailed methodology for the assessment of allergenicity of genetically engineered foods
  • reviews the merits of SCIT (subcutaneous immunotherapy, or allergy shots) and SLIT (sublingual immunotherapy) techniques of allergen specific immunotherapy

Emeritus Scientist, CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi University Campus, Delhi, India

Dr. A. B. Singh has more than 40 years of research experience in pollen and fungal allergy and was the coordinator of multi-centered project on “Aeroallergen and Human Health,” sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, New Delhi, India. He has completed many projects from United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Indian Council of Medical Research, and the Ministry of Environment and Forest of India, surveying pollen and fungal allergens and identifying the important allergens that trigger allergic symptoms, such as asthma, rhinitis, and dermatitis etc. He worked at the Nebraska University (USA) as the Borlaug Fellow on genetically modified food safety assessments and has been involved in a EPA-funded project on Legume Food Allergies in India. He has also compiled a National Pollen Calendar of India for allergy diagnosis and treatment. He was formerly Vice President of the Asia Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (2010–2013) and served on several committees of World Allergy Organization (WAO). Other roles included Secretary General of South Asia Association of Allergy, Asthma, and Clinical Immunology (SAAACI), Secretary of the Indian College of Asthma and Applied Immunology (ICAAI), and Member Executive Council of the Indian Aerobiological Society (IAS). He has reviewed many projects from different funding organizations and is a regular reviewer of several international journals of allergy and immunology.

He has been the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Aerobiology since its inception in 1982 and is also Associate Editor of the Indian Journal of Allergy and Immunology. He has delivered more than 250 guest lectures and invited talks at international and national conferences on allergy, asthma and aerobiology in different countries and in India.
